In Transit
On a wall, I projected a video of an airplane cabin and drifting sky, transforming the space into a suspended, in-between world. Three screens were mounted onto the wall, blending with the projection. Airplanes, as transient spaces between destinations, mirror the dislocation I feel of being never fully rooted in one place or history. On them, I showed nonlinear clips from Manchu films across different eras, fragments of my own face, and a voiceover of my breathing. By rejecting linear editing, I challenged simplified narratives of ethnic identity and history, suggesting instead that culture is layered and continually renegotiated. On the two screens on the side, I aim to capture the emotional turbulence of finding one’s belonging. On the other hand, the screen in the middle shows my changed emotion from uncertain to peaceful. Through breathing and grounding myself, I realized that people could root themselves and identify with everywhere.
